CHAPTER 14
Victoria didnât have much time. She changed from her school spirit T-shirt into a pullover that left one shoulder bare and rushed downstairs.
Aware of Rustyâs ravenous appetite, she prepared a tray of fruits, cheese, and crackers and sliced French bread. She removed a container of spaghetti and meatballs from the freezer and placed it in the microwave. Although both she and Rusty were light drinkers, she carried an open bottle of wine and an ice bucket to the library. She built a fire, and soon the chilliness dissipated. After she fetched the tray of appetizers, she arranged cushions in front of the fireplace.
A moment later, she heard Rustyâs familiar footsteps as he entered the room. âHi.â
Victoriaâs pulse raced through her veins. His emerald eyes glittered like stones as they focused on her bare shoulder caught in the firelight.
âHi. I hope youâre hungry.â
âIâm starving. I had a quick bite to eat earlier before the game, but it didnât last long.â
âHelp yourself to the appetizers while I check on the spaghetti.â
âYou must have the fastest stove in the West,â he drawled. âWhen did you have time to rustle up spaghetti?â
Victoria chuckled. âI fixed it ahead of time. All I had to do was pop it in the microwave.â
âAh, the wonders of modern technology.â
By the time Victoria returned to the library with the main course, Rusty had eaten all of the grapes, a banana, and most of the cheese and crackers.
He poured two glasses of wine, and she exclaimed, âI hope you have room for the spaghetti.â
âI hope you have enough.â
When Rusty finished two huge plates of the pasta and the rest of the cheese and crackers, they settled themselves in front of the fire. He stretched his long legs, bringing their bodies closer together. âI canât thank you enough for driving to Yuba City tonight, Tori. You inspired me to lead the boys to an amazing win.â He clinked his wine glass against hers.
âDonât be silly.â His nearness caused a pleasant warmth to seep into her.
âItâs true. You saw how badly the boys were losing. I watched my team fall apart right before my eyes. Poor Troy was sacked four times in the first quarter alone. They were afraid and so was I until you yelled out to me. When I heard you call the other team âchumps,â I swear I nearly laughed aloud. I realized at that moment what I had to do. We never would have won without you.â
Heat flamed in Victoriaâs face. âPlease donât flatter me.â
âWhy not? Youâre an incredibly beautiful and sensitive woman. Perhaps if I tell you that often enough, youâll believe it.â
She shook her head, and he lifted her chin so he could look into her eyes. âTori, did I frighten you when I kissed you at the game?â
âNo,â she murmured. âIt was in the spur of the moment.â
âHow about now? When itâs only you and me?â
âRusty,â she began, but her voice trailed away. She couldnât stop him when a liquid fire burned as it traveled through her.
